Work Hours + Expectations
Part and Sum is designed to be a flexible work environment for responsible professionals. This guide is meant to help you navigate and understand what we expect of each other as colleagues.
Default work hours:
- Based on your location, work with management to establish your default work hours. For example, NY default work hours at 9-5 ET. LA is 11-7 ET.
- Part-time team members will design bespoke work hours.
- Need to change your default work hours (even temporarily)? Talk with Jess and your manager to make sure the change is approved.
- Company-wide “Deep Work” blocks on Wednesdays and Fridays are designed to help us have sufficient heads down and jam time without the distraction of meetings.
Expectations:
- Every team member’s default work hours should shared on **Google Calendar and Slack.** This communicates to the team that you are generally available during those times.
- Life happens, and we trust you to augment your working hours to accommodate the demands of work and life.
- Calendars should be kept up to date so that we understand roughly what each other’s day or week looks like.
- If you send a Slack message to someone outside of their working hours, do not expect a response.
- If there is an emergency and/or someone needs to get in touch with you outside of your working hours, they can do so through the phone number listed in the Part and Sum Directory + Manuals to Me. Please list how you prefer to be contacted (text or call).
- If we were in an office, we would easily be able to see if you got up from your desk to go for a walk, grab lunch, etc. It is harder when you’re in a remote environment. Use Slack Status Emojis to communicate your whereabouts to the team.

- If you’re going to be away from your desk for up to 2 hours during your default work hours, let the team know by updating your Slack status to away.
- If you are going to be away from your desk for 2-4 hours during your default work hours, let the team know by posting in #general and updating your Slack status to away.
- If you’re planning to be away from your desk for 4 or more hours during your default work hours, please request this time through our PTO Policy and communicate it as ‣.
- If you will suddenly be OOO due to illness or unforeseen circumstances, please communicate this to the team via Slack in #general or let Jess know and she can help inform and action.
- Due to time differences, team members can request you augment your work hours to accommodate client calls. It is okay to say no to this if you are unable to do so.
- Due to tough calendars, you might need to request time with team members during Deep Work blocks - please seek other solutions first and only schedule meetings during these times if 1) it's actually a jam session (collaborative deep work) or 2) it’s a meeting that needs to happen and there are no alternative solutions.
- Always communicate with context. If you need something to be addressed by a specific time, communicate that in your message. Do not use terms like “EOD” or “EOW” since people might have a different idea of what that means.
